NISPOM Deadline 10/12/12

Observing and Responding to the NISPOM Deadline:

Using GSA-Approved Containers

Is your company contracted with the Department of Defense, Central Intelligence Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or the Department of Energy? Are you given access to classified information in order to fulfill those contracts? Then you’re aware of the National Industrial Security Program (NISP) which was organized in 1993 to be the authority on managing the needs of private companies who need access to classified information. To this end, they release the NISP Operating Manual (NISPOM) explaining to contract organizations how to handle classified data, how to move it, the procedures for different employees handling it, security controls, incident responses and how to store the data. The latest edition of this manual came out in June 2011 and will be updated twice a year from now on.

One of the recent changes to NISPOM came out in July 2008. NISPOM paragraph 5-303 is aimed at correcting companies who are in violation of Classified National Security Information Directive No. 1 which states that your company cannot store classified information in non GSA-approved containers. This change has a deadline attached to it, October 12, 2012. That means your company has less than a year to make sure all classified materials are stored in proper containers. The Department of Defense will not waive the requirement. That means it is your responsibility to avoid any potential penalties for not following NISP guidelines.

K.L. Security is here to assist you with making the transition to any needed GSA-approved containers. We have the products, the pricing and the know-how to ensure that you meet that deadline. Below are listed some the GSA products that K.L. Security carries.
