X-09 Locks vs. S&G 2740 Lock
Choosing the Right Lock:
Compare the X-09 and the S&G 2740
Here at K.L. Security Enterprises, we’re committed to bringing you the best security products available. As a customer, one of the choices you often face is choosing between two great models or products. Don’t get frustrated! We’re here to help with that decision-making process. Purchasing a safe or secure file cabinet isn’t just about which product has the thickest steel or the most drawers, it’s also about the mechanisms used to lock-up said safe and file cabinets. K.L. Security has two lock models available that come with or can be retrofitted on our GSA Containers. The Kaba Mas X-09 High Security Lock and the Sargent & Greenleaf 2740 High Security Lock are both approved under Federal Specification FF-L-2740. We’re going to explain a little about both locks, so you can make the best decision for yourself and your business.
Let’s start off with the Kaba Mas X-09 High Security Lock.
The X-09 is a third generation electromechanical lock that meets the GSA standard FF-L-2740, which is the U.S. Government’s highest security standard for doors and container locks. The X-09 has also been approved by the GSA for use on Class 5 and 6 filing cabinets and Class 5 security vault doors. This keyless lock has three modes of operation; single combination code, dual combination code (which allows for TPI – Two Person Integrity) and a supervisory/subordinate mode. The Kaba Mas X-09 Lock is powered by their PowerStar technology, which relieves the need for batteries.
The tamper-resistant X-09 cannot be hacked because all digital information is stored in the unit processor’s non-volatile memory. Numbers are visible through an LCD display with indicator arrows, so you know which direction you should turn the dial. The X-09 also comes with an audit feature; which records all openings and is not resettable. The audit also records unsuccessful openings after three incorrect combination attempts and only resets after a correct opening. The cast and bolt strength of the lock has been measured at 600 lbs in two directions and it represents a big step forward in controlled access technology. You can find more information on the X-09 at the Kaba Mas website.
The newest lock to be approved under the FF-L-2740 Federal Specification is the S&G 2740.
Produced by Sargent & Greenleaf, the 2740 is also approved for both Class 5 and 6 Containers, as well as Class 5 Security Vault Doors. The 2740 offers simplified installation by eliminating the need for ribbon cables from outside of the container to the inside of the container. Its stainless steel lock bolt is also strong enough to withstand up to 600 lbs of force and its installation is made very easy with S&G’s industry standard “Magic Module” footprint, which reduces the need for mounting plate or bolt work modifications. With a bolt throw of .461 of an inch, it will match up with boltwork from older GSA Containers. The bolt is tapped and drilled to match most bolt extensions currently in use.
The 2740 has the familiar left-right-left dialing sequence for one-handed use and has two modes for the spy-proof dial; single and dual use. A life-long lithium battery provides power without the need to spin the dial and there are indictors if a low battery situation should occur. As opposed to an LCD display, the 2740 uses high-contrast and laser-etched numeral/index marks, which most users are familiar with from other types of combination locks. You can find more information on the 2740 at Sargent & Greenleaf’s website.
