NISPOM 5-303 Deadline | 1 October 2012

EMINDER: NISPOM paragraph 5-303 applies to contractors the provision of Classified National Security Information Directive No. 1 which prohibits the use of non-GSA-approved security containers for the storage of classified material effective October 1, 2012.

Your GSA Approved Containers must meet the FF-L-2740 Lock Specification! This requires the replacement of ALL Lock Bar Containers

The Department of Defense will not waive the requirement to terminate the use of non-GSA-approved security containers for the storage of classified information. All contractors should be planning for the 2012 implementation by transitioning classified holdings in other than GSA-approved security containers (Examples include lock bar containers, fireproof file cabinets with lock bars, etc) to other approved storage methods, and disposing of or digitizing classified information.

A 3 Step Approach to Compliance & Transitioning Classified Holdings

  1. Ensure that all classified holdings are stored in GSA-approved security containers or equivalent facility.
  2. Documents of a classified nature that can be disposed must be done so with an NSA/CSS 02-01 Paper Shredder
  3. Classified materials that are digitized could be stored and secured on an ioSafe disaster proof hard drive or ioSafe mil spec. hard drive.
